Top 10: October 2011

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

On the menu: all sorts of pop!

10. "Nuclear Seasons" by Charli XCX
Atmospheric electro pop with female vocals always makes the cut!

9. "A Real Hero" (Paul Remix) by College ft. Electric Youth

8. "Garden" (Joe Goddard Remix) by Totoally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs
Anything with Hop Chip blood is IN.

7. "Eyes" (Extended Mix) by Kaskade ft. Mindy Gledhill
Absolutely beautiful! One of the most beautiful by Kaskade in a while. This is great to listen to while coming down.........!

6. "Seconds" (Syd The Kyd Remix) by Little Dragon
The love affair between Little Dragon and Syd The Kyd have me in complete bliss. This is the best lo fi beat I've found in a very long time.

5. "Last Night" by Niki and the Dove
THANKS to my partner in crime MikeeGB, for discovering and relaying this fantastic entity, a la Knife vs. Iamamiwhoami vs. Bjork. This is my favorite song in their continuous melodic album: The Drummer. It's a must have.
Please visit their site and support!

4. "Weekend" by Class Actress
This bitch, Elizabeth Harper, from Brooklyn, puts me through it. This is the second single in a top 10 this year. Album of the year? Make sure to check out their album, Rapprocher, definitely embedded in contemporary pop.

3. "The Look" by Metronomy
The sounds are so fragile "it's like having a party in an antique shop!" theneedledrop.com

2. "How It Ended" by The Drums
Check my twitter in about 24 hours. I will be listening to The Drums LIVE in Manhattan. When they play this song, I will scream and jump twice. In an attempt to make you fall in love with them instantly, they already had me at their previous album.

1. "We Found Love" by Rihanna ft. Calvin Harris
It's very rare that a video and a song have a deep impression on me simultaneously. This entire production raped me.

Top 10: August & September 2011

Apologies for our late arrival! Autumn is in, and so is the continuation of fantastic beats, here at Funky Brew!

On the menu: Summer jams heard around the world (seriously).

A U G U S T 2 0 1 1

10. Why Even Try (RAC Remix) by Theophilus London
Rapping and rhyming is essential. It's the source of expression for hip hop. NO, don't go away, this isn't a hip hop song. It's a beautiful indie track with a pretty good rapper behind the mid accompanying the melodious jam.

9. Go Outside (Menahan Street Band Remix) by Cults
"A mixture of smoky organs, bells, handclaps, sultry bass and guitar underneath the poppy vocals of Cults singer Madeline Follin."

8. Glad You Came by The Wanted
A highly contagious beat, with a fantastic video taped in Ibiza, Spain. When we heard it in Spain, it became one of our summer anthems.

7. Tonight (Give Me Everything) feat. Ne-Yo & Afrojack by Pitbull
This one was obviously going to make the cut. It's an international hit, by Miami's very own. I heard it in every city I was in this summer.

6. Rolling in the Deep (Egesten Bootleg) by Adele
There were several bad ass remixes, but I had to be a little modest. I don't want to blow your speakers away. Ibiza went crazy over this!

5. Day Glow by Motion Sickness of Time Travel
A magical combination: ambient-dream pop and female vocals. This has an otherworldly edge that will make you want to download the entire album. This can make an excellent progressive trance remix.

4. Starlite (D-Pulse Remix) by Paul Weller
You'd think you were shrooming, but no, no it's just the music. This reminds me of walking on the shores of Ibiza, witnessing a spectacular sunrise. Echoes of males vocals with lucid pop and breaks all in one. Who would've thought? This is perfection.

3. Hours by Tycho
Get comfortable in Scott Hensen's atmospheric tunes. He's back! Wordless narratives are the best, especially when they're composed of radiant synths.

2. Amor Fati by Washed Out
Trancy and indie melodies with a steady thump. The vocals make the song, but the beats are the soul.

1. Hello (Kenny Parkz Remix) by Martin Solveig & Dragonette
Though it's the least bombarding remix, it's unique due to the peak transforming itself into a rather soothing electric feel. This was also played in every city! I never grew tired of it because I always heard a new remix of it. Please, DL these other remixes: Awiin Remix, Blasterjaxx 'Dutch Afro' Bootleg, and the E-Thunder Remix. They're all fantastic.

S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 1

10. Whatever Leads Me to You by Geoffrey O'Connor
Australian pop is very promising!

9. Colours (Foster the People Remix) by Grouplove
Anything by Foster the People is fab!

8. Aquifer by Laurel Halo
Complex sounds and heavy polyrhythmic tunes a la Aphex Twins!

7. Sirens by The Pack A.D.
Never underestimate the revolution that was ROCK!

6. Esa Boca Linda by MYNC & Wally Lopez
This is nothing like the original from the 90s... THANK GOD!

5. What a Feeling (Extended Mix) by Alex Gaudino feat. Kelly Rowland
I love her vocals mashed with dance music. This is older than August, but a goody.

4. Red Alert by Cansei De Ser Sexy
Their successful new album has filled the stereos of even South Bronx gangsters (I'm not even kidding). This Brazilian group have those of the North obsessed!

3. Jailbait by Avicii
His newest!

2. Bermuda Locke (Dawn Golden and Rosy Cross Remix) by Crosses
Totally and completely strange and dark. The real deal is after 1:45.

1. I Love You by Cansei De Ser Sexy
Their most vibrant single in their new album.

SUNDAY SCHOOL MIXOLOGY: Acid, She Wrote by Michael Gayboner

Another Sunday, another mix. I've been doing so many "classics" mixes because well, the music was just so much better. However, we've been recently turned onto this whole Deep House movement as it's kind of right up our alley. Still housey, somewhat discoey, and it can still be danced to. Kind of reminds me of early/acid house from the late 80's/early 90's.

Therefore, this week's edition of Sunday School Mixology features some brand new tracks we're obsessing over mixed in with some super duper classics we're always obsessing over. It's not surprise that I am utterly and overly obsessed with the Acid/303 sounds. It's just super delicious and makes our spines tingle, so I've dedicated this mix to the sound that makes your body move. Let's jack the house. --MikeeGB

Top 10: July 2011

The southern sun in
Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro / Brasil

On the menu: Synth pop, Indie pop, all types of pop!

10. Real is a Feeling by Pictureplane
Travis Egedy, who usually produces trance, produced this beauty. He has actually received more attention from the media with this marvelous synth-pop piece, than with his trance beats. His stage name is Pictureplane.

9. Safety of Objects by Anni Rossi
Electro & indie pop are her fortes. All of her songs in her recent album titled "Heavy Meadows" are pleasing to the ear, with a variety of instruments throughout that promise tunes for different moods. The album was actually released in 2010, but this single is what's made the album somewhat known.

8. Raw Spectable (Diamond Rings Remix) by Miracle Fortress
A canadian indie rock band, whose album is actually soothingly rocky. If you're into soft indie rock or alternative.. this is for you. This remix turns it into something else, though.

7. I Found a Reason by VHS or Beta
This band is giving Depeche Mode style. They combine pop, disco, and house into one smooth sound. They also remind me of Cut Copy. Their next album "Diamond & Death" is scheduled to be released in September, and from what I hear of their first two albums, their 3rd project should be promising.

6. Throw Away This by Telepathe
These electropop girls have actually toured with Ladytron and The Faint. Their synthpop sounds are promised to resonate in your ear drums for days. Check out their song titled "Chrome's On It" also a fab track.

5. Back That Up (Original Mix) by Antranig
Antranig is a house music producer who is practically behind the scenes. ALL of his tracks have a force of their own, and are most likely to be club hits. If you don't move to this, you won't move to anything.

4. Pumped Up Kids (Chrome Canyon Remix) by Foster The People
They're a cool alternative band, but I like the remixes better, which have nothing to do with the actual band.

3. Mirros (Cosmic Kids Remix)
by Superhumanoids
Cosmic Kids did a major facelift to this song, that is rather dull in its original state.

2. Keep You by Class Actress
Cool mash up of the song and video... as the video IS a few decades old.

1. Now That I'm Real by Chad Valley
This whole entire album, by the name of Equatorial Ultravox, is great! It goes through valleys of moods from melancholic tunes to uplifting and euphoric melodies. His voice matches perfectly with what the sounds offer, echoes of colorful harmonies. Yes, it's possible! I have a special attachment to this entire album, as it reminds me of my stay in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil.

SUNDAY SCHOOL MIXOLOGY: The Adventures of Oso & Mikee by Michael Gayboner

Even if we're 7 or 8 states apart, the two baddest bitches in this world connect through music. As you can see through that pic above, we are BFF'S till we gag and die....15 years and counting! So, here is another mix of HARD HOUSE created from the music we frolicked to when both of us homo's lived in the same state and had a time! A time when homo house was at it's best!

This is the music we pranced around to before we reached our afterhours joints! The tracks all homo's around gyrated to before we took our last "you know what" and walked the runway into our spots under the afterhours spotlight.

Enjoy this shit. Dance like the sun never came up, or down! -- MikeeGB

Top 10: June 2011

On the menu for this month: not house music, there are other things in life.

10. How Can U Luv Me? - Unknown Mortal Orchestra

Funky & rockish! Why not?

9. Sadness Is A Blessing (Gold Panda Remix) - Lykke Li

I'm not even gonna start with this bitch. I love everything she's done thus far, videos and music.

8. Hannah (Easy Does It Remix) - Freelance Whales

Indie pop at its best. I love the dubstepesque sound to this. The video is pretty bad ass too!

7. Goose & Gander - The Generationals

One of the top 10s in April was a track in their album, "Actor-Caster". I promised to listen to the album. WELL, it's awesome, the entire thing.

6. Get Up - Jonquil

Indie Rock! Baby, I think you might like this. =)

5. Fiebre Tropical - Chucha Santamaria Y Usted

I love the title, and the artist's name is hilarious. Chucha means "pussy", for people from the Caribbean coast of Colombia. ;)

4. Prisoner of Love (feat. Antony) - Jessica 6

3. Careful Who You Dance With (Xiu Xiu Remix) - Parenthetical Girls

I love how male vocals sound like women, and female vocals sound like men, nowadays. How ambiguously androgynous. Add indierock to that formula and voila! The video is phenom! I love the display of pubic hair, and the very end of the video is disturbing. The song is giving me Italoness (Italo Disco) all the way!

2. Lose It - Austra

Fabulous song in her debut album "Feel It Break".. already released. Get on it.

1. Trip To Your Heart - Britney Spears

I know, I know, this is too mainstream for my usual antics. However, listen to it. I rest my case.

This week I've mashed and mixed some of my fav Italo Disco choons! My very first love for the genre of electronic music was Italo/Hi NRG, so I bring to you just a sample of the tracks that make life go by a bit easier when I immerse myself in their sounds. UPDATE: iamamiwhoami ACTION!

It is most certainly no secret that we here at Funky Brewster are sickly obsessed with a certain enigmatic electronica multimedia project; iamamiwhoami and that we have been since day uno! Today has been a crazy day in the creepy world of iam and we felt it best to give some updates on all that's going down....

  • After a 6 month hiatus, iamamiwhoami returns! After much speculation that the project was over once that amazing piece of long form video imagery they called "In Concert" was completed, we get an entirely new video AND song. What's best out of this whole spectacle is that we now have an entirely new storyline/mystery to rack our brains! ; john has been hailed amongst fans as their best work yet. The video proves that iam is knocking down this illusional wall that blocks our online lives with our real lives and in a sort-of transition. See for yourself....

  • 2 weeks later the original website which aired the amazing "In Concert" updates with a promo shot taken on the set of the ; john video indicating iam will once again act in concert, yet this time we are given an exact event as to where this will take place and it is 100% in front of a live audience, or so we are led to believe. You never know with this bitch!
  • As the news leaks that iamamiwhoami is set to play at Sweden's Way Out West Festival (in short their version of a mini-Ultra) a second promo shot appears on the festival's website. A shot that is so far fetched from what this whole campaign has been about that it is very clear this is now becoming something more than just a viral campaign. This is very much a transition into a legendary electronic act. Get ready ya'll!
  • Just to add further onto the speculation a third promo image now appears on the D.E.F. Management website indicating they have signed iamamiwhoami. It should be noted that this agency is also managing head to acts such as Moby, Rex The Dog, Röyksopp, Kleerup, The Knife, Fever Ray and our beloved Robyn. The latter artists having at some point been speculated to be a part of the iamamiwhoami team.

So what does this all mean?? Who the fuck knows?? When do you ever know what anything in iam's world means?? While there may not be a distinct meaning to this all, it sure as hell is A LOT of activity coming from the iamamiwhoami camp. Activity that should prove to benefit the die-hard fans who thought they'd been left high and dry and newly interested parties alike.

We've got a couple of month's to go before the festival (August 11 - 13) takes place and in true iamamiwhoami fashion you can be sure some sort of YouTube spectacle will appear to prepare the world for their LIVE debut. We couldn't be more excited unless of course we are unable to view this spectacle online at some point.

See, their plan/tactic has worked all along. Keep it locked for the latest and greatest news on the one and only iamamiwhoami! LONG LIVE OUR MADRAGORA QUEEN!!!! :::go look it up if you don't know what that means:::

Peace & Love Grease,
MikeeGB

Architecture in Helsinki never let me down.

6. ; John - iamamiwhoami

NEW/OLD SHIZZ: Cocknbullkid + OLUGBENGA = Hold On To Your Mixtape

It's no surpirse that I am a beyond HUGE fan of Anita Blay, the UK native also known as Cocknbullkid. She's just a gem that's been dug up and finally given a record deal. Her lyrics hold so dear to us, I believe I mentioned in a previous post that her lyrical content are "significant scribblings of love any one in their right mind during their mid to late-20's need in their life".

We are eagerly awaiting her debut album Adulthood scheduled for release this spring. However, to hold us over Anita has blessed us with a fab mixtape of her back catalogue. We think it's in your best interest to download this shit, aside from the fact that it's free....IT'S FUCKING AMAZING!!!!

Be on the lookout for her debut cause it's guaranteed to be sweeeeet! We adore you Anita! Enjizzoy! -- MikeeGB

Top 10: February 2011

On the menu for this month: WMCesque stuff.

10. Take Me Over (Flight Facilities Remix) - Cut Copy

THEY'RE AT IT AGAIN! They've released their third album "Zonoscope" and it's fantastic (I'm not surprised).

Check out my favorite remix by Flight Facilities:

9. Trust & Believe - Jeannie

This hidden jewel is a must have for the electro pop lovers. In her new album titled "Ny To London" she's included remixes of legendary songs like "The Sign" of Ace of Base, and "All I See" by Kylie Minogue. The whole album is bliss, but I had to pick one.

8. Solardome (Original Mix) - Jayphonik

For the progressive house lovers, this one is definitely one to roll to. ;)

7. I Am The Beat (Treasure Fingers Remix) - Señor Stereo

At first it seemed corny, but then I couldn't get it out of my head, and plus I like the name of the remix "Treasure Fingers"... sounds like the name of a... never mind.

6. Sunlight (feat. Dan Black) - Bag Raiders

The song is phenomenal. I love the Cut Copy remixes that Bag Raiders have released, and when I did a quick wiki on them, I learned that they've released their own shit. I fell in love. Oh, another music producing duo from Australia!! P.S. The video = true love.

5. In Miami 2011 (Dj Wady and Outcode Remix) - Ricky Stone

I pay my respects to any song about Miami. After all, Miami is one of the pioneering cities of house music in the Western Hemisphere!!! WMC 2011 is here. Cheers! P.S. "Are you having fun ???? IN MIAMIIIIII"

4. Flash (Mixin Marc, Lex Da Funk Remix) - Green Velvet

I gooped when I heard this remix. The video is cool. Destination: IBIZA!

3. The Chase 2011 (Martin Brodin Remix) - Giorgio Moroder & Martin Brodin

I love remixes of old italo tracks. This almost made me cry. Can you guess the name of the original? No really, tell me because I forgot. Mikee????

2. Off (Original Mix) - Ministry Of Funk

This is a remix of "Off the Wall" by MJ. It's simply awesome.

1. Ocean (Ray Mang Mix) - 2020 Soundsystem

I fell in love instantly. This band is made up of 2 Brits and 2 Argentinians. REALLY? awesome. Hopefully I'll be in Argentina this summer, because from what I've seen the music scene in Buenos Aires is INSANE.

HOUSE THAT IS HARD: Kina - Me (Thunderpuss Club Mix)

I'ma hook it up this week! Going into the vaults and pulling out some of the BEST Hard House classicas! Me was my second personal ANTHEM on the gay dance floor (first one to be posted later on!)

This amazing remix is done by none other than the infamous remix duo Thunderpuss. Just about every remix in the years of 1999-2002 were done by Thunderpuss. They were the absolute shit! Sadly, they parted ways and are now remixing under their own names, but nothing can truly touch the magic their Thunderpuss sound had.

Love the song, love the message, love the beat! Enjizzoy! --MikeeGB

HOUSE THAT IS HARD: Pulse feat. Antoinette Robertson - The Love That You Are

We've been listening to a lot of hard house recently. Winter was always our season for debauchery in the Ft. Lauderdale gay clubs of yesteryear. We really miss the days when the music you heard in gay clubs was a bit more on the soulful side. It was drenched with snares, drums, 909 loops, and vocals from the Divas ruling the underground (not so much those who were ruling the Billboard 200). It was the melodies that ringed in your head repeatedly while making you strut your stuff under the neon nights. It was amazing!

The Lover That You Are is already a classic house track with them diva vocals. It got a bit of a fantastic refurbishment for the late night/circuit gays at the end of 1999. It was our Saint/Coli track, the one that made us strut our stuff under the mirror ball. The legendary TP Lords performed this track at The Saint one glorious Friday night, which was one of the first drag queen performances I'd ever seen back in my coming out days.

Alright, enough already. Download this shit, dim the lights, blast up your system, throw your hands in the air and sway back & forth while stomping your feet and doing your own rendition of Vougeing. WORK! -- MikeeGB

perfect song to sober up to..

8. My House - Hercules & Love Affair

7. You Can Dance (Gemini Club Remix) - Chilly Gonzales
a sweet remix of Chilly's track.. the album is ultra loungy!

6. I Was Drunk (Tocadisco's 'Luke I Am Your Father' Remix) - Riva Starr
This just HAD to be included, despite it being a 2010 track. It was our NYE's anthem!

5. Genius of Love (The Pinker Tones Remix) - Tom Tom Club
This remix is so... electro and just so... funky.

4. Penguin - Avicii
totally brilliant remix of an old 80s orchestra's piece. I posted both the old and new songs so that you can compare on the blog. www.fnkybrewster.blogspot.com. Avicii definitely ate this.

3. Hot Mess (feat. Elly Jackson) (Duck Sauce Remix) - Chromeo
I'm loving the release of 90sEsque house beats!

2. Empire Ants (Miami Horror Remix) - Gorillaz
Australia definitely has beauty to offer, in terms of music. I love Miami Horror's disco-house style!

1. The Road Leads East (Original Mix) - Schadenfreude
My favorite track this month! So housy and trancy!

Musical Translation

This is an amazing translation of musical genre. The two videos posted are very distinct in genres, but it's the same melody. It's great that djs can edit and remix old songs; it keeps the song alive through more than one generation. The Penguin Cafe Orchestra (1989), remixed by Avicii (2010).

I look forward to contributing to this pool of music. SOON!
